Yes, you read it right. NO JOB EXPERIENCE yet ONE OF THE BEST. How?
This is not to say working in a hotel is easy, no way.
But, in today’s world, any technical part of a job is translated into an algorithm, a procedure or simply steps in service and you can TRAIN ANYONE on it.
What CAN NOT BE TRAINED simply and at reasonable time is a MINDSET.
You want to have people with strong hospitality mindset and problem-solving skills, confidence and intellect in your team. That’s VALUABLE.
But let’s see why it is even PROBLEMATIC to have someone with a RICH EXPERIENCE working on a regular position in operations.
This person practiced their job at different places and however excellent these hotels were, they are NOT your hotel.
For example, the way someone would communicate with a guest in a big chain hotel perhaps is completely opposite of what you imagine as a perfect scene in a guest-staff relation.
Don’t fall into the trap of “some things go without saying” and “if they are professionals they will know”. They don’t know your hotel the way you do, don’t let them conclude what is expected and desirable in your hotel. It’s not fair to them nor good for your business organization.
A person with lots of experience will find it DIFFICULT TO ADAPT to different approach and might even fail at delivering your unique voice and being REMARKABLE AMBASSADOR OF YOURS.
Certainly, experience brings knowledge, skills and confidence but it’s also very employee specific. In other words, that person is a brand for themselves already.
You want people who will in every single aspect be synonym for your hotel’s identity.
However, this absolutely does NOT exclude them being authentic and personal.
Your job is to emulsify these two to get IRRESISTIBLE PERSONNEL who all speak your hotel’s language. And that’s THE WINNING COMBO.
